12 February 2025
On Wednesday, February 12, we take a look back at a very young Denzel Washington, long before his super star drama days, in a quirky, light-hearted (and somewhat perplexing) 1981 comedy. George Segal portrays Walter Whitney, a successful executive who resides in an upscale Southern California suburb. Like all of his friends and neighbors, Walter is white, and he is shocked when he learns he has a son he never knew about — black teen Roger Porter (played by Washington his very first film role). Despite his surprise, Walter welcomes Roger into his home; unfortunately, the less accepting Mrs. Whitney (Susan Saint James) boots both of them out of the house, and Walter’s racist boss (Jack Warden) fires him, leaving him in a tough spot. The distinguished, African-American actor, Paul Winfield and television’s “Laugh-in” funny man, Dick Martin co-star in this weird and wacky comedy. An edgy, controversial film for that time, it provides an opportunity to see the emergence of future major talent, Denzel Washington and a closer look at race relations of that era.
