CLASSIC MOVIE NIGHT CONTINUES WITH ICONIC DIRECTORS’ SHOWCASE!
Moving on to Wednesday, April 23, just a few days after Easter, we screen famed director, George Cukor’s grand Oscar®-winning film adaptation of the famous Lerner and Lowe Broadway smash hit, based on Bernard Shaw’s play “Pygmalion.” The film depicts a poor Cockney flower-seller, Eliza Doolittle who overhears a phonetics professor, Henry Higgins, as he casually wagers that he could teach her to speak English so well she could pass for a duchess in Edwardian London. The film stars Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle—replacing Julie Andrews from the stage musical—and Rex Harrison as Henry Higgins—reprising his role from the stage musical. There was some controversy among the play’s devotees as to Warner Bros.’ choice of Hepburn’s casting in the lead role that had been Andrew’s Broadway triumph. Decades later, many of those critics have come to realize that Eliza’s transformation to amazing beauty might not have been quite as effective with Julie Andrews, a lovely lady for sure, but not the spectacular beauty that Hepburn was.
The film was the culmination of Cukor’s many decades of outstanding directorial achievements, directing the likes of Super Stars, Katharine Hepburn, Greta Garbo, Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Lana Turner, Judy Holiday, Ava Gardner and Judy Garland.
Watch for the spectacular set designs and outrageous fashion creations by the famous Cecil Beaton. More Oscars®!
As an added treat on this evening, our dear friends and film sponsors, Kim Metcalf and Karen Saaty will join us in the festivities with lovely treats and goodies!
