CLASSIC MOVIE NIGHT…REVISITS THE KID THAT GOT LEFT BEHIND!
On Wednesday, December 4, we re-visit that clever little kid who keeps getting misplaced at vacation time. Macaulay Culkin repeats the role that made him a movie sensation in 1990. Kevin McCallister gets left behind in the original film in which the family rushes off to Paris and, somehow leaves him stranded in the family’s huge, rambling house during the Christmas holiday. Kevin proceeds to live the high life, while his parents (John Heard and Catherine O’Hara) panically scramble back to the states to retrieve him. In the meantime, Kevin fends off two criminals, Marv and Harry (played by Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci, respectively), who have been casing out the McCallister home, awaiting their departure. The two clumsy crooks eventually become victims of Kevin’s ingenious and often painful traps.
In the sequel, Kevin is, once again, separated from his witless parents at the airport, as they take off for Christmas in Miami. Kevin, accidentally boards the wrong plane for…New York. Upon arriving in the Big Apple, Kevin happily makes his way to his rich uncle’s apartment, which is empty and undergoing re-modeling. He has a ball in New York and meets a bevy of interesting folks: a pigeon lady living in Central Park (Brenda Fricker), a kindly toy shop owner, (Eddie Bracken), the nasty concierge of the Plaza Hotel, (Tim Curry) and the hotel’s owner (played by a future 2-time president). As fate would have it, he also runs into his old nemeses, crooks Harry and Marv, who have escaped prison. Through a curious series of events, Kevin lures the bungling crooks to his uncle’s home and inflicts more painful havoc as they try to rob the mansion. A huge box office smash hit, the film features beautiful New York holiday vistas and a memorable musical score from composer, John Williams.
