Classic Movie Night’s latest series, “Westerns…with a Twist,” continues to defy what is perceived as “typical’ oaters in its final two film presentations.
First up, on Wednesday, October 8 at 7:15, we present the final film from icon, John Wayne. In this 1976 drama directed by Don Siegel, Wayne boldly portrays an aging gunfighter entering the 20th century, diagnosed by his doctor friend (played by James Stewart), with terminal cancer. Faced with the prognosis of a painful demise, he seeks to live out his days in peaceful dignity. As he navigates the changing landscape of the Old West, he is challenged by gunfighters who want the glory of taking down this legendary figure. A strong supporting cast that includes Lauren Bacall, Richard Boone, Rick Lenz, Harry Morgan, Hugh O’Brien, John Carridine, and a young Ron Howard make this a memorable fable about a dying era. The film hits Wayne close to home as his own death from cancer lurked in his near future. This final role is one of the strongest in his illustrious film career, along with “The Searchers” and his Oscar-winning role in “True Grit.”
