CLASSIC MOVIE NIGHT at the Historic USO Building

CLASSIC MOVIE NIGHT TURNS  15  THIS YEAR!!

On Wednesday, January 15, Classic Movie Night premiers its 2025 series of Black History Month films with an old friend, whose films we have showcased for the last three seasons: the famed actor, director, author, humanitarian, and two-time Oscar® recipient, Sidney Poitier, heading into the twilight years of his long, illustrious career.  In a rare repertory film outing, the master actor is not the star of the production. Director Phil Alden Robinson’s 1992 adventure is a complex but lighthearted thriller about computers and cryptography, government and espionage, secrets and deception and betrayal. It teams Poitier with a star-studded roster of performers: Robert Redford, Ben Kingsley, Dan Ackroyd, River Phoenix, David Strathairn, Mary McDonnell, and a surprise cameo by the late James Earl Jones, a protege of the great Poitier. In this production, Martin (Redford) and his group of security specialists are hired to steal a “black box,” but soon realize the job has nefarious and far-reaching consequences. The plot twists are numerous, the crisp dialog and production values are quite engaging, and the music score by James Horner is memorable. One can understand why Poitier would agree to take a back seat in this thrilling caper, working with likes of Redford and Kingsley in Universal Pictures’ grand money-making movie. Our audiences will love this film, but they must make sure to keep their eyes and ears open for the whirling twists and turns. It is a simple thing to guess the title. Just think of the synonym for people secretly lurking about and one for a pair of your favorite old tennis shoes. Hmm, that should set the mind to pondering! You can also check out the Events Board located just outside the front door of the Historic USO Building, or, you can stop in to pick up a film schedule during Book/Gift Shop hours: Wednesday through Saturday from 11 am to 3 pm. Or… give us a call during Shop hours.

If you are  planning to visit the nearby Balsam Street Farmers’ Market, park  your car in one of our two convenient lots, and take a short walk to the event. Our Snack Bar and our Book/Gift Shop open at 6:15 pm , screening Classic Cartoons  until 7:15…Movie Tine!
