20 September 2026
LOCAL AUTHOR/ HISTORIAN TO SPEAK IN SEPTEMBER,
The September program of the Society of the Upper Mojave Desert will feature Elizabeth “Liz” Babcock, who plans to entertain the audience with a PowerPoint presentation about her grandfather, Coe Hayne, a Baptist preacher who combined an adventurous spirit with missionary zeal during his long and happy life. The presentation will take place on Sunday, September 20, at 2:00 pm at the Historic USO Building located at 230 W. Ridgecrest Blvd.
Babcock’s presentation, “Grandpa’s Great Adventure,” is subtitled “Coe Hayne Takes a 1932 Covered Wagon Trip from New York to California,” and will illustrate an odyssey he convinced the American Baptist Home Mission Society to fund in honor of the society’s centennial. Enlisting Babcock’s father to drive their newly purchased 1930 Dodge sedan to tow the wagon, Coe invited an orator and a tenor to climb aboard, and the group met ever-increasing crowds as they presented programs at dozens of sites across the country.
The meeting is FREE and open to the public.
